Tour of Utah route takes in 43,621 feet of climbing

Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah organizers unveiled a challenging route for the August race that will include a run through Bryce National Park, a new approach to the Little Cottonwood Canyon climb, and a return to Empire Pass for the finale. The six-stage UCI race takes place August 6-11 and will start in the state’s southern canyons for the first time.

“Featuring the signature red rock country of southern Utah for the first time, there is tremendous anticipation for this year’s race and the new courses,” Miller Sports Properties president Steve Miller said in a press release. “The opportunity to bring our race to these national parks and national monuments is unprecedented for professional cycling. Athletically, the Tour of Utah will truly challenge our riders while spectators enjoy the competition against the backdrop of the state’s stunning scenery.”

The race’s third stage will return to Mount Nebo, the highest peak in the Wasatch Range, and will climb 43,621 vertical feet over 586 total miles. For more route information, visit the Tour of Utah’s website.

Nature Valley Grand Prix names teams and composite rosters

Nature Valley Grand Prix organizers have completed the National Racing Calendar event’s team lineup and have named the members of the Nature Valley and Kowalski’s Markets Collegiate All-Stars composite teams. The five-day stage race takes place in Minnesota and Wisconsin June 12-16.

Twelve riders qualified for the men’s and women’s Nature Valley composite team via six Pro Chase events held throughout the spring. The team’s riders have earned travel stipends, lodging, and team support for the event. U.S. professional road champion Jade Wilcoxson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) is a product of the Pro Chase program.

Organizers also announced the six-woman roster for the Kowalski’s Markets team, which brings together top collegiate women’s riders to compete with the domestic elite peloton. The six riders will be seen wearing their university colors during VeloNews’ live video coverage of the Nature Valley Grand Prix next week.

    Page signs with Competitive Cyclist

U.S. cyclocross champion Jonathan Page has signed a sponsorship deal with Salt Lake City-based Competitive Cyclist. Page, a part-time resident of Kamas, Utah, near the online retailer’s headquarters, will ride for the brand for the 2013-14 season.

“Jonathan is a perfect fit for Competitive on many levels — he’s the consummate professional, loves ice cream, and is a complete animal on the bike,” said Jonny Atencio, sports marketing manager at Competitive Cyclist and Backcountry.com, in a press release. “Jonathan has logged countless hours and miles on his bike, and stood on many podiums. We’re now excited and looking forward to sharing these feats with him as part of the Competitive family.”

Competitive Cyclist formerly sponsored the UCI Continental team owned by On the Rivet Management, which runs the 5-hour Energy-Kenda team. Page was without a title sponsor for much of the 2012-13 season. Fuji signed the Belgium-based American in mid-January and he rode to a somewhat-surprising national title in Verona, Wisconsin.

Details of the contract were not released.
