Cathy
Turman is somewhat of an expert on the Katy Trail.
Cathy and her husband own & operate Scenic
Cycles located right on the Katy Trail. That's not
all. They live on the trail too so I valued their input
on this bike trail.

Located Right On The Katy Trail
The Katy
Trail is extraordinary because it benefits so many
people of differing abilities. Each section of the
trail is unique and reflects the season. Even
winter is beautiful with exposed bluffs and eagles
flying over the river. Part of the beauty of the
trail is that you can turn around any time you want - 5
miles for some and 225 for others.

The
Katy Trail is a wonderful place for anyone to
experience the great outdoors . |

Some
cyclists use it to train because it requires constant
pedaling and the limestone chat creates a natural
"resistance." Road riding after the Katy
Trail is an absolute joy! While I enjoy riding the Katy
near my home/store in Marthasville, if we are going to
drive to ride, my favorite section of the trail is from
Treloar to McKittrick. This is a pretty lonely stretch
but it is absolutely beautiful - bluffs rise from the
river bed with the Katy in the middle. Eagles can
usually be seen flying over the river near Gore.
There
aren't any services, so be sure to bring water and a
snack, but it is well worth the trip. Similar to the
very popular and oft photographed Rocheport area, the
solitude appeals to me. My husband and I love to take
the tandem and sing - certainly best done in an isolated
area.

On very
hot days, I love to ride from Weldon Spring to Greens
Bottom Road. Again, bring your own water and
snack, but you will enjoy a canopy of trees and a cool
breeze from the river. Benches set into the trees
allow you to watch the river and enjoy the abundance of
wildlife. Once, a fellow had brought along a
hammock and was enjoying a nap on a gorgeous afternoon.
If you need some peace, the Katy Trail is a good place
to find it!
After
observing here at Scenic Cycles for 10 years, I can
safely say there are very few who ride the Katy Trail
and return frustrated or upset. Even a flat tire
or rain cannot ruin communion with the majesty of nature
and the contentment to be found after the "voices
in your head are quiet" (per Patrick Murphy in The
Katy: Stories of the Trail video). Important decisions
and business/family outings - the Katy Trail can handle
anything.
There
are bed & breakfast inn's, as well as camping, along
the Katy Trail for those who would like to ride the
entire trail. Do travel with as little as
possible. Some mail clothes to their lodging and
mail them home. Some use panniers (saddlebags) and
carry everything on their bike. I would not
recommend using a backpack for long trips because the
weight of your pack increases discomfort from your seat
ten-fold.
Whatever
your style - it works on the Katy!
